Current NEA programme: Choa Chu Kang Chinese Cemetery, Phase 9Affected blocks 3A to 3E, 14E to 14G, 17, 18 and 19, for graves dated 1965 to 1997. From 1 August 2026 these graves are being hoarded to prepare for exhumation, and the public can no longer enter the affected areas.
The steps, in order
- Check the graveConfirm the block and grave number against NEA's phase notice.
- Register your claimNext-of-kin claim the grave with NEA before the deadline.
- Engage a registered contractorIn NEA-managed facilities, only NEA-registered contractors may carry out exhumation. We can introduce one.
- Choose where the remains goA free NEA niche, a family niche at Nirvana, or scattering. We'll explain each.
Where the remains can go
NEA standard niche
Free for each claimed grave exhumed under NEA's programme, at Choa Chu Kang or Mandai Columbarium.
A niche at Nirvana
A single, double or family suite, so grandparents can rest with the rest of the family.
Relocating an existing niche
Moving ashes from a government niche, a temple or overseas. We handle the paperwork with you.
How do I know if my family's grave is affected?
NEA publishes each exhumation phase with the affected cemetery blocks and grave dates, and puts notices at the graves. Send us the block and grave number and we'll help you check.
Is there a free option?
Yes. NEA provides a free standard niche at a government columbarium for each claimed grave exhumed under its programme.
Why would we move the remains to Nirvana instead?
Families choose Nirvana to keep generations together in a family suite, for the setting and care, or to be nearer the rest of the family.
Someone called about our grave and asked for payment. Is it real?
Be careful. NEA says officials will never ask you to transfer money or share bank log-in details over the phone. Check with ScamShield at 1799 if in doubt.
