How it usually goes

  1. The first callCall or message us at any hour. Your loved one is brought into care from the hospital or home. Tell us your dialect group so the right rites can be arranged.
  2. Preparing and setting upYour loved one is cleansed, embalmed and dressed. The altar and wake are set up at a parlour or your HDB void deck.
  3. The wakeUsually 3 or 5 days. Relatives and friends visit to pay their respects, and a Taoist priest conducts the rites on the final night.
  4. The final dayThe hearse carries your loved one to the crematorium, with transport for the family. We then help with the ashes and the niche or tablet.

Rites differ by dialect group

Taoist funerals vary between Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese, Hakka and other families. Tell us your family's dialect group, and what the elders remember, so we can talk through the right rites.

  • Hokkien: the ritual known as Tng Say Hong
  • Teochew: Shan Tang (善堂)

Questions

Taoist funerals: questions

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp, any hour.

How long is a Taoist funeral in Singapore?
Usually 3 or 5 days. Nirvana has a 3-day package, NV Longevity, and two 5-day packages, NV Supreme and NV Legacy.
What is the difference between a Taoist and a Buddhist funeral?
A Taoist altar has lanterns and offerings of your loved one's favourite food, with no Buddha statue or symbol, and a Taoist priest conducts rites on the final night. At a Buddhist funeral, monks chant and there's a Buddha statue or symbol near the casket.
Do the rites depend on our dialect group?
Yes. Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese and Hakka families each have their own traditions. Tell us your dialect group and we'll talk you through them.
How much is a Taoist funeral package?
It depends on the package, the rites and when you buy it: arranging a funeral at the time of need costs more than buying ahead. Call or WhatsApp us, at any hour, and we'll tell you today's price before you commit to anything.
